Jezebel's Father's Land

The native land of Jezebel is the Phoenician Kingdom. Her father is Ethbaal king of Sidon. Phoenician kingdom comprises of Arwad, Byblos, Berytus, Sidon and Tyre.

Ahab's choice:

 "And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethabaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him."(1Kings16:31).

The Phoenicians are part of the Canaanite civilization, occupied the eastern coastal regions of the Mediterranean Sea. This coastal region is filled with thriving economy based on the sea. The city is well known for commerce right from the ancient days. Mordern day Lebanon is this empire.

During the rule of King David and Solomon their commercial ties were sound.

"And Solomon sent to Hiram, the king of Tyre, saying, as thou didst deal with David my father, and didst send home cedars to build him and house to dwell therein, even so deal with me."(2 Chronicles 2:3) 

Prophet Isaiah, prophesied over the city of Tyre:

The city of Tyre is known for its glory. It's pride and it's destruction  was prophecied in the following verses. 

"Be silent, you people of the island and you merchant of Sidon, whom the seafarers have enriched. On the great waters came the grain of the Shihor; the harvest of the Nile was the revenue of Tyre, and she became the marketplace of the nations." (Isaiah 23:2-3).

Religion:

They follow a polyethestic worship. They served many gods and dieties as found in the canaanite civilization. Their main gods were baal, ashtoreth, molech. They being sea travellers, worshiped baal the male god of strom and thunderbolt. They even gave their children as sacrifice to those idols.They worshiped ashtoreth, queen of heaven.

Israel:

The Lord of Israel warned them to destroy and cut of the roots of the people of canaan when they captured the land which they failed. Soon they fell a prey to the customs and religious practice of the people around them.

The people of Israel followed the ways of the Lord as long as Joshua was alive, but after they gave way to the practices of the canaanites."Then the Israelites did evil in th eyes of the Lord and served the baals." (Judges 2:11). They started  to worship baal and ashtoreth,this triggered the anger of God, which led them into captivity by their neighbours." The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. They took their daughters in marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods."(Judges 3:5,6).

It was a constant fight for the Lord to pull his people from the hands of the canaanite religion. In the same case when we review the calling of Gideon, after he got his assignment; he broke down the altars of baal and the pole of asherah.

"That same night the Lord said to him,"Take the second bull from your father's herd, the one seven years old. Tear down your father's altar to baal and cut down the asherah pole beside it. Then build a proper kind of altar to the Lord your God on the top of this height.Using the wood of the asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second bull as a burnt offering."(Judges 6:25-26).Asherah pole is errected, where-ever Baal idol is. Asherah is the mother of Baal. Archeological findings holds evidence for the above quoted Biblical verse. 

The land of Tyre and Sidon is mentioned in the Bible several times.During the rule of Omir's son Ahab, in-order to create a political and commerical alignment, he inter-married the daughter of the Sidonian king. This type of inter-cultural marriage is the one that God of Israel detests.Through this marriage pact we see the entry of Jezebel the princess of Sidon crowned the queen of Israel.
